Sue and Alex Glasscock founded The Ranch in September 2010. The couple’s passion for healthy and balanced living through outdoor activities and appreciation for nature were the guiding principles in creating their first fitness and wellness retreat located in Malibu, California.
In 2004, Alex spent a week at a wellness retreat to unwind and unplug from his busy life and had a transformational experience. He left rested, re-energised and empowered and lost 11 pounds and significant inches. He was inspired to create a programme to help other people recalibrate and jumpstart a sustainable, healthy lifestyle in a luxurious setting. Alex began researching and studying integrative methods for balanced living. He also started mentoring and training individuals in his newly discovered philosophy of “balanced living.” After years of searching for the perfect location, Alex and Sue discovered the historic property, which is now home to The Ranch Malibu.
Centred on physical endurance, balanced nutrition and wellness in nature, the no-options program is designed to deliver sustainable results by providing guests with the skills, discipline and practice to make lasting changes. One of the guiding principles in creating The Ranch’s intimate experience was developed by Alex and Sue’s own travelling habits, as well as their love for entertaining and hosting people in their home. During their personal travels, Alex and Sue are mindful of incorporating healthy practices and fitness into their daily routines. When developing The Ranch, they wished to create an environment that allowed guests to focus solely on wellness practices in a setting that is familiar, comfortable and luxurious. Alex and Sue also wanted a nurturing environment where the guests’ needs are top priority, anticipated and attended to by the staff so that participants can draw their attention to their own mental and physical changes.
Alex finds continued inspiration from his guests’ life stories and their personal journeys of transformation, and Sue takes pleasure in engaging with guests from time to time, whether it be joining a morning hike or dropping in for a yoga or weight training session. Sue and Alex have been married for 31 years and currently reside on The Ranch with their dogs, Max and Clara, two goats, and two horses. They are both also actively involved in initiatives devoted to the creation and implementation of sustainable tourism practices.
